Is Castorice’s Global Buff a Game-Changer for Honkai: Star Rail?

With Version 3.2 around the corner, the release of Castorice has sparked intense debate among players. Her stand out is her global passive which allows her to revive an ally once per battle, even if she's off-field by temporarily delaying their down state.

What are global passives

Gobal passives are passive abilities or effects that apply universally to the player or their characters across the entire game, rather than being tied to specific skills, actions, or items. These passives typically offer ongoing benefits without the need for active input, and they are often built into the game's systems or mechanics.

When Castorice is obtained or present in the team, her passive allows all allies to receive a one-time protection from being downed after taking a lethal blow. If the affected ally's HP increases or they gain a shield before their next turn, they remain active; otherwise, they will be downed

Why Players Are Concerned

The biggest concern stems from locking a global passive behind a character, which some consider predatory. Even though Honkai: Star Rail is a PvE game, not pulling Castorice could significantly reduce the value of an account. And let’s be real—no one wants to feel like they have to pull a character just to keep up.

Like most gacha games, Honkai: Star Rail suffers from power creep—new characters continuously outperform older ones. This issue is especially noticeable in newer Memory of Chaos, where even high-spending players struggle to keep up. If new content is balanced around Castorice’s global buff, not having her may make endgame content significantly harder. Now, if future content starts being balanced around Castorice’s passive, players without her might find it way harder to clear high-end content.

Rumors say Castorice won’t be the last character with a global passive. If Hoyoverse keeps adding more, pulling for these units might become mandatory just to keep up with endgame. Players will need to pull for these characters to stay competitive in the endgame content. It's no secret that the global  passives will only get stronger from here.

If Castorice’s global buff is too impactful, every future team without her will feel inherently weaker—not because they’re bad, but because they’re missing a powerful passive advantage that the game may be designed around. If Hoyoverse doesn’t carefully balance her, she could become a mandatory pull or, worse, the first of many characters with global buffs, further power-creeping older teams.
